Joy-Con are unusually versatile for their size. Slide them onto the console’s rails for handheld play, detach them and use them as a pair for a full controller layout (with the optional grip), or turn each one sideways and hand one to a friend — each Joy-Con is a complete standalone controller with its own stick, buttons, and SL/SR shoulder buttons on the inner rail. That’s local two-player out of the box, no extra hardware needed.

Both units carry motion controls via accelerometer and gyroscope, plus HD Rumble — Nintendo’s fine-grained haptics, capable of conveying subtle sensations like ice cubes shifting in a glass rather than a simple buzz. The right Joy-Con adds an IR Motion Camera for gesture and distance detection in supported games, and NFC for amiibo. The left Joy-Con carries the Capture button for screenshots and video clips.
