Introduced alongside the Xbox One S, this revision of the Xbox Wireless Controller is the one that added Bluetooth — and it remains one of the most comfortable, best-balanced gamepads ever made. The layout is the familiar Xbox arrangement that PC games are built around, refined rather than reinvented.

The headline upgrade over the launch Xbox One pad is connectivity. Alongside Microsoft’s own Xbox Wireless protocol for the console, Bluetooth support means it pairs directly with Windows PCs, tablets and phones without a dedicated adapter. Plug in a USB cable and it works as a wired controller too.

Physically, the changes are subtle but noticeable in the hand. A textured diamond-pattern grip covers the back case and handles for a more secure hold during long sessions, the bumpers were reshaped for a more reliable press, and the overall body is slightly slimmer. Wireless range is improved over the original model at up to roughly twice the distance.

The 3.5mm stereo headset jack is built in, so any compatible headset plugs straight in without the separate adapter earlier controllers required. Impulse triggers deliver localised vibration in the triggers themselves in supported games — the feel of individual tyre slip or weapon recoil — on top of the standard rumble motors. Button mapping through the Xbox Accessories app lets you remap inputs and swap stick and trigger behaviour.
