Apple’s most capable watch, and the first with built-in two-way satellite communications. Beyond cellular coverage entirely, the Ultra 3 can text emergency services, message friends and family, and share your location — the standout reason to choose it over an Ultra 2 for anyone who trains or travels off-grid.

The display is the largest and brightest in any Apple Watch, using LTPO3 and wide-angle OLEDs so it stays readable at an angle. Always-on refreshes once per second rather than once a minute, giving a ticking seconds hand without lifting your wrist. The Waypoint face adds a live compass, a satellite complication and Night Mode for preserving night vision, and the display doubles as a flashlight.

Battery life runs to 42 hours in normal use and 72 hours in Low Power Mode, with 20 hours of continuous outdoor workout tracking in Low Power Mode with full GPS and heart rate. Fifteen minutes on the charger gives roughly 12 hours.

For running specifically, the Ultra 3 pairs precision dual-frequency GPS with advanced metrics, Pacer, heart rate zones and Custom Workouts. Hypertension notifications and a daily sleep score join ECG, blood oxygen, temperature sensing, fall detection, crash detection and Emergency SOS. On-grid, 5G handles downloads, with dual-antenna switching to hold signal in weak coverage.

The titanium case — now 3D printed with less material — carries a sapphire crystal front and 100m water resistance.

The Trail Loop is the lightest of Apple’s Ultra bands: a thin, breathable woven nylon strap with a pull tab for quick adjustment mid-run. It’s the band Apple designed specifically for runners and hikers, and the easiest to live with over long distances.
