The next evolution of Nintendo’s hybrid console, and a substantial hardware step up rather than a refinement. Switch 2 keeps the three play modes — TV, tabletop and handheld — while improving almost everything around them.

The display is a 7.9-inch LCD touchscreen, considerably larger than the original Switch’s 6.2-inch panel, with HDR support and frame rates up to 120fps. Backed by much greater processing and graphics performance, games look and run noticeably better in handheld. Docked, the console outputs up to 4K to a compatible TV.

The Joy-Con 2 controllers are the other headline change. They attach magnetically rather than sliding along rails, with larger metal SL and SR buttons and a release catch on the back. Each can also be used as a mouse — lay one flat on a desk and slide it to move an on-screen cursor, with the stick acting as a scroll wheel. It works in the system menus and in compatible games, and switches back to normal controls the moment you lift it. HD Rumble 2 delivers stronger, faster, more varied haptics than the original.

GameChat is built in: press the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2 for voice chat, screen sharing, or video chat with a compatible USB-C camera (sold separately). A noise-filtering microphone in the console handles the audio.

Internal storage is 256GB, expandable with microSD Express cards. Your existing Switch library largely carries over, with both physical and digital games supported.
