The console that made hybrid gaming mainstream. The standard Switch plays three ways from one machine: docked to a TV at up to 1080p, propped on its stand for tabletop play, or handheld on the 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen — and the transition between them takes seconds.

The Joy-Con are what set it apart. They slide onto the console’s rails for handheld play, detach and pair with the included grip for a conventional controller layout, or split so each one works as a standalone controller with its own stick and SL/SR buttons. That’s local two-player out of the box with no extra hardware. Both carry motion controls and HD Rumble; the right Joy-Con adds NFC for amiibo.

Internal storage is 32GB, expandable with a microSD card, and the Switch library is one of the strongest of its generation — Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros. and a vast independent catalogue.
